Privacy Policy

The Wainwright Companion is designed with your privacy in mind. We collect only the data necessary to help you track your Wainwright fell completions, navigate routes, and optionally share your progress with friends. We do not sell your data, use third-party analytics, or display advertising.

1. Location Data

We collect precise location data (GPS coordinates and altitude) to provide core app features:

• Showing nearby fells and fell suggestions
• Tracking your walk with a GPS breadcrumb trail during active navigation
• Recording walk statistics (distance, ascent, duration)

Location data is collected only while you are using the app, or in the background during active walk navigation that you have started. You can stop navigation at any time.

Your GPS track data is stored on your device and synced to your private iCloud account. It is never sent to external servers or third parties.

2. Completion & Walk Data

When you log a fell completion, you may provide:

• Date completed
• Personal notes
• Star rating (1–5)
• Weather conditions observed
• Names of walking companions
• Photos from your device photo library

All of this data is stored locally on your device and synced to your private iCloud account via Apple CloudKit. Photos remain in your device photo library — only reference identifiers are stored by the app, not the photos themselves.

3. User Profile

Your profile includes your display name, preferred units (metric/imperial), start date, and optional target completion date. An avatar image may also be stored.

Profile data syncs to your private iCloud account. If you enable social features, a limited public profile (display name, total fells bagged, join date, and avatar) is made visible to users who follow you.

4. Social Features

Social features are entirely optional. If you choose to share completions publicly:

• Your display name, fell name, date completed, notes, rating, and attached photo are visible to your followers
• Other users can find you using a share code that you generate and choose to distribute
• You can unshare individual completions or disable sharing entirely at any time from Settings

Social data is stored in Apple CloudKit’s public database. We do not use contact lists or other discovery methods.

5. Weather Data

The app fetches weather forecasts from Open-Meteo, a public weather API. Only geographic coordinates of Lake District fell regions are sent — no personal information is transmitted.

Weather data is cached locally and in a shared CloudKit public cache to reduce API calls for all users.

6. Device Identifier

A vendor device identifier (provided by Apple, unique to this app on your device) may be sent to our rate-limiting service when using optional AI-powered features. This identifier is used solely for rate limiting and is not linked to your identity or stored beyond the current day.

7. iCloud Sync

Your completion data, walk tracks, routes, and profile sync automatically to your private iCloud account using Apple CloudKit. This data is:

• Encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple
• Accessible only to you (private zone data)
• Subject to Apple’s iCloud Terms of Service and Privacy Policy

You can disable iCloud sync in your device’s Settings app under iCloud.

8. What We Do Not Collect

• No third-party analytics or crash reporting SDKs
• No advertising identifiers or ad tracking
• No email addresses, phone numbers, or contact information
• No browsing or search history
• No financial or payment information
• No health or fitness data beyond walk statistics

9. Data Retention & Deletion

Your data is retained for as long as you use the app. You can delete individual completions at any time within the app.

To delete all your data, use the Delete Account option in Settings. This permanently removes all your data from both your device and iCloud, including any publicly shared completions and your public profile.

Uninstalling the app removes all local data. iCloud data can be managed through your device’s iCloud storage settings.

10. Children’s Privacy

The Wainwright Companion is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected in the app and on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
